The Old 3rd served with the Army of the Potomac mainly in Virginia from 1861-1864. The reorganized 3rd Michigan Infantry was a completely separate unit from the original (or "old") 3rd Michigan. The former served from 1864-1866 in the western theater of the war. For more information on the reorganized 3rd Michigan go here.
